Character/ Creature Design

A crucial element of film design lies with the development of characters and creatures that cannot be realised through performance alone, a facet which is becoming especially important with the continued popularity of effects-heavy fantasy and science fiction films. The works in this section include characters executed in 2D and 3D, digitally and practically. They include early pieces designed for film production companies utilising traditional pen and ink methods and more recent examples realised on programs such as Autodesk Mudbox and Adobe Photoshop. When designing a creature it is important that they be based on an adherance to reality, so that they may be effectively intergrated into film productions. The characters are grounded in a strong understanding of anatomy which is continually practicised on personal projects such as portrait sculpting in clay and modelling with digital programs.
